Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman. He became especially known as the founder of Levi Strauss & Co. and as the first manufacturer of riveted denim pants which later became known as jeans. The brand name Levi's is derived from his first name.
Life and career[]
Levi Strauss was born on February 26, 1829 as Löb Strauß in Buttenheim. After his father's dead, his mother emigrated with him and two of his sisters to the United States. They joined his two elder brothers who had emigrated already before and operated a dry goods business in New York City.
In 1902, Levi Strauss died in San Franciscoon September 26, 1902. He was buried at the cemetery in Colma, south of San Francisco.
